How to clean your sapphire gemstones

If you have already invested in a gemstone you and I both know how precious it is to even look at it. But over time stains, water spots or grime can appear on your gemstone if not cared for properly.

What I recommend is to always use a fin cloth to wipe your gemstones. An ordinary piece of clean cloth is ideal but do you know that cloth piece that comes with cameras and spectacles? They work wonders on cleaning sapphire gemstones.

If wiping doesn’t get off the grime on your gemstone try using some mild soap and brush gently with a soft toothbrush. Let the gemstone soak for 5-10 minutes to let all that dirt loosen so that you do not have to brush hard.

Usually brushing and wiping worked for me most of the time but there may be cases that the dirt is latched on to the gemstone and is difficult to take it off. In this case I suggest that you seek professional help from a jeweler or a lapidarist.

People also ask, is it safe to clean your gemstones with an ultrasonic cleaner ? Answer is yes and no both. Again leave it to the professionals. Ultrasonic waves may affect the structural integrity of a gemstone if inclusions are present. Some gemstones can’t even withstand the vibrations of ultrasonic waves.

What we recommend you not to do is, never use harsh chemicals like caustic soda, chlorine etc. Do not use brushes that are too rough. Steel wool. Scrubbing pads ets.

Always use a cotton glove or a gem grade piece of cloth to handle gems.

Always use a surface close to you to inspect gems. You do not want to drop your gemstone. It also may damage your gemstone (Chip,Crack).
